Ring ET IN ARCADIA EGO Fully Set with Diamonds

The skull throughout history has been both a symbol of human transience and yet also a continual reminder of the treasure and gift of life. ET IN ARCADIA EGO is a classic Latin phrase – “And in Paradise I (am)” – best transcribed perhaps as “I too enjoyed the pleasures of life”. Idealized by painter Nicolas Poussin in the 17th century, this memento mori was broadened to suggest that through art we might become immortal. In more recent times the skull has reemerged as an ironic encouragement to live life to its fullest.

Ginkgo and CADEAUX JEWELRY

CADEAUX JEWELRY created the Ginkgo pin in 1990 in reverence for a deep symbolism. This 300 million years old tree endured natural and man-made cataclysms, earning its stature as sign of longevity, endurance. A symbol of everlasting values.

Its split leaf (“biloba”) inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to identify the Ginkgo with his thesis of duality - of two in one and one in two - in a poem in 1815, presenting the leaf as a symbol of love and harmony, akin to Yin and Yang in Eastern philosophy.

In physical respect, the Ginkgo’s health-giving properties have made it a coveted ingredient in ancient medicine and in modern supplements and cosmetic products.

CADEAUX JEWELRY made its original Ginkgo pin by minting technique that revealed the leaf’s precise and delicate texture, which gave rise to the English name Maidenhair tree.

The Ginkgo’s rich properties and its profound symbolism - both in the East and in the West - make it a perfect icon for CADEAUX JEWELRY.

Ginkgo @ Kunsthaus Zürich

Earlier this year, on 17 April, Kunsthaus Zürich (Muesum of Art, Zurich) celebrated its 100th anniversary. A wonderful repository of modern art, from Munch to Picasso and Rodin to Polke, this museum also features in its courtyard, behind the library, a Ginkgo tree that was planted at the time of Kunsthaus' foundation one hundred years ago. The tree is legendary for its medicinal properties and along with its unique bi-lobed leaf it is of major significance in culture, poetry and philosophical meaning.

A recent article (below) paid tribute to the Ginkgo tree as patron of Kunsthaus Zürich.

Gold

In a current article THE ECONOMIST newspaper, London, contends that the present value of gold is still nowhere near its peak of 1980, in inflation adjusted terms. http://econ.st/dxtzET

CADEAUX JEWELRY recalls the erratic peak of the gold price 30 years ago. For a moment in time it pulled the carpet from under the jewelry trade, as the worth of inventories rose daily and it became much more profitable to recycle gold jewelry than to market it. For that moment anything sold as long as it was made of gold. The focus was on the material or monetary value and not on the creatvive, stylish element of jewelry, which really defines its social function.

We recently have moved closer to such a situation again. And inevitably, gold has that magical combination of properties, as a rare commodity that maintains its worth against a backdrop of inflation-prone paper values, at the same time with those unique physical properties that make gold resistant against corrosion and decay and allow it to outlast milleniums in its original form and beauty. And its physical appearance, its color and lusture, which have become synonimous with gold's value, physical properties and beauty.

Gold jewelry transports all these extraordinary characteristics, not only its monetary value. Ultimately it is design that distinguishes jewelry from commodity, that makes jewelry magical, functional and personal, where beauty and style are enjoyed long after the price is forgotten.
